Dont be Were here to end the debate once and for all, and explain why its perfectly fine to use a resume vorlage.Make a Resume in MinutesIts time for you to start your job hunt. You either need to write your first resume, or give it a much-needed update. You want it to look good, but youre tired of fighting with Microsoft Word, and youre far from a Pages expert. You think to yourself why notlage use a resume schablone? But youre not sure youve seen folks on the web saying how resume schablones make you look lazy, uncreative, and wont help you stand out.Are they correct? To demonstrate that these criticisms are not only incorrect, but they are actually cravenly self-serving, Im going to critique an article by TheLadders about whether you should use a resume te mplate.TheLadders quotes experts that also sell resumes. Conflict of interest much?TheLadders argues that you should not use resume templates. To support their argument, they quote various career-management and absatzwirtschaft experts. These career gurus argue that, hiring professionals can spot a cut-and-paste resume job a mile away and that resume templates shout, I took a shortcutIt appears to be a strong argument on the surface. After all, career management and marketing experts cant be wrong, can they?Yes, they can be wrong.Worse, they can be deliberately misleading. The article quotes Barbara Safani from Career Solvers saying that resume templates reveal laziness and dont put forward, the image you want to convey to hiring managers.A brief look at Career Solvers reveals that they sell resumes starting at $1,000. Thats clearly a conflict of interest.A brief look at Career Solvers reveals that they sell resumes starting at $1,000. Thats clearly a conflict of interest. Of course she will argue that resume templates arent good. If you use a template, she wont be able to sell you her service for thousands of dollars.Shel Horowitz is quoted later in the article saying that resume templates are bad because some are designed poorly. Not only is that an irrelevant red herring (of course people shouldnt use bad resume templates), he also suffers from a conflict of interest. He also sells resume writing services for hundreds of dollars on his site accuratewriting.com.To buttress their argument further, TheLadders vaguely writes that, one resume template vendor who spoke to TheLadders even agreed with their rationale that resume templates arent ideal.Did that really happen? Should we take TheLadders word for it?Resume templates are the devil Unless Susan Ireland sells them. Then its perfectly legitimate Wait a minuteThe article takes a bizarre turn when TheLadders interviews Susan Ireland about the merits of resume templates. Susan argues sensibly that it isnt chea ting to use a resume template theyre more like tools. Furthermore, she bluntly states that professional resume writers use their own templates anyway. TipNot a single professional resume writer is starting with a blank page to make a resume. And here we all were, thinking resume templates were the devil. The articles entire second section is tagged on like a careless afterthought, as though Susans argument doesnt completely demolish the reasoning against using a resume template in the first half of the article.Heres the reason Susan Ireland takes the practical (read correct) approach to talking about the merits of resume templates shes a savvy businesswoman who is making money by both selling expensive professional resume writing services and ready-made resume templates for $24.95.After all, it wouldnt be smart of her to say that the template portion of her business is useless and going to negatively affect the job hunt of her paying customers, would it?Why be dishonest about resu me templates? What Is a Deductible
What Is a Deductible Sometimes it feels like health insurance plans are designed to be terrifically confusing, requiring you to pay for certain expenses, fully covering others, all while navigating a wealth of jargon to understand your coverage (read a premium, deduction, copayment, coinsurance, etc). While it may be frustratingly complex, health insurance is so important that I believe it is worth taking the time to truly understand your coverage. Once you understand, youwill know what you can expect from your plan, which can impact both your wellness and your wallet. Understanding health insurance basics will also help youdetermine how much to budget for things like deductibles and copays.Lets start with a common plan element, a deductible. What is a deductible, exactly?A deductible is a specific amount that you must pay for health care before your insurance plan begins to contribute. Deductibles are typically platzset annually. For example, if your plan has a $1,500 annual deducti ble, you will have to pay the first $1,500 in costs yourself before your insurance begins to foot the bill.Your deductible is separate from the amount that you pay for your health insurance coverage. Your health insurance bill (also called a premium) is usually a monthly bill. Some employers will cover a portion of the premium for you, as part of your benefits package. Paying your premium gives you access to health insurance - but does not pay for your healthcare-related expenses.Thats where your deductible comes in. Each health care plan has a defined deductible, and deductibles can come in different forms. For example, you might have one of the followingYou could have a deductible for each individual on the plan, if you are partnered or have a family. If each person on the plan has a $2,000 deductible, and youre a family of four, your expenses for one family member will not contribute to the deductible of another. You could have deductibles for different categories of services. A c ommon example is a separate deductible for health care (doctors visits) and prescription drug expenses.Youll occasionally hear people talking about hitting their deductible for the year. This means that their out-of-pocket costs for the year have equaled their annual deductible. At this point, there typically are other costsfor which they will be responsible. Once youve paid your deductible expense (the deductible has been met), most plans require copayments or coinsurance for covered health care services, but your insurance company will start coveringmost of thecosts, which will vary on your insurance policy.Coinsurance and copayments are additional ways that insurers share the cost of coverage with consumers, and they primarily differ in how they are calculated.Coinsurance requires you to pay a percentage of the cost of the medical expense. For example, if you had a $5,000 test, and your plan included a 20 percent coinsurance payment for that service type (after you paid your dedu ctible), youd be responsible for 20 percent. In this example, you would pay for $1,000 and the health insurance provider would be responsible for the remaining 80 percent, or $4,000.Copayments (occasionally referred to as copays), however, are flat fees for medical expenses. For example, you may have a $350 visit to your primary care physician and a $50 copay. You would be responsible for $50, and the health insurance provider would be responsible for the balance of $300.Both coinsurance and copay rates may vary by type of service. For example, a visit to a primary care physician, emergency room, X-ray and lab work may all have different rates from something like long-term care.It can be frustrating to understand that your responsibility for health care costs continues after you have met your annual deductible. However, insurance plans include an out-of-pocket maximum, which serves to limit the amount you will be responsible for covering in a given year. After you have reached your plans out-of-pocket maximum, the insurance company is responsible for all additional expenses. This is a very important element to an insurance plan, as it can be a critical barrier to a catastrophic financial situation. To encourage behaviors that stab und sttze long-term health, some services are covered by health insurers without any cost to you. Preventative services, which include things like flu shots, important screenings and tests will be listed in your plan, and typically vary by gender and age. I strongly encourage you to understand and take advantage of the preventative services included in your plan, especially because paying for preventative services are typically better than paying for long-term care down the line. When evaluating health insurance plans, it is challenging to determine typical costs (deductibles, coinsurance or copayment rates, out-of-pocket maximums). Insurers evaluate many factors when pricing their plans. However, it is generally true that plans with h igher premiums have lower deductibles. To get a good understanding of plan costs and structures in your state, you can explore your states plans, which will typically be tailored to your ZIP code.If you are evaluating a job offer, the human resources team can give you detailed information on the plan provider, so you can speak to the insurer to make sure that you fully understand. If you are a freelancer, you may want to check out self-employed health insurance options that vary in how much your deductible expense and premiums will cost you heres more information on that.Whatever your healthy insurance policy is, youll want to know what kind of deductible expense youre looking at. Having a total grasp of the plan elements will make you an informed and empowered consumer, and it will contribute to your overall health and well-being.--The Feminist Financier is on a mission to help women build wealth and own their financial independence, by improving financial literacy and taking the mystery out of money.
